ocean waves under blue sky during daytime

What If the Storm Never Calms?

After dinner last week during a thunderstorm the rain pushed sideways across our street and the trees dipped so low the leaves scraped the siding of the neighbor’s house. I stood at the window watching the storm, as I usually do, and prayed the same short prayer I always pray first: “Lord, keep people safe.”
We all want the same miracle. We want the voice that once hushed Galilee to hush our storm. Sometimes the sky does clear by morning. Sometimes it does not, and the water keeps slapping the doorframe. That is where trust has to breathe.

The Unfinished Storm
Paul knew that place. In Acts 27 the ship fought wind and black water for two long weeks. The crew stopped eating. They threw cargo overboard. Hope leaked out with every wave. In that chaos Paul said, “Keep up your courage… for I have faith in God that it will happen just as He told me.” God did not stop the storm. The ship was still broken. Yet everyone made it to shore because the promise was kept. I think about that when the forecast refuses to blink. The promise is not always that the storm will end tonight. The promise is that you will not face it alone.

The God Who Holds You Steady
There are days you pray for healing and the illness lingers. You ask for reconciliation and the distance remains. You wait for a door to open and it will not move. Christ’s promise still stands: “I am with you always.” His presence does not depend on the circumstances. His presence holds you steady inside them.
Learning to Praise in the Rain
It takes courage to worship when the outcome is unclear. Some of the strongest praise comes from hospital hallways, damp porches, and quiet kitchens after midnight. It sounds like this: “God, even if You do not change this, I will still trust You.” That kind of faith is an anchor, not because feelings are strong, but because the anchor is.

When the Clouds Refuse to Break
Paul’s story ends with people clinging to planks and swimming for shore. Sometimes that is how deliverance looks. What breaks around you can still carry you forward. You reach the beach shore soaked, shaking, and surprised that you are standing.

So, hold on. The waves may be high, but they are not higher than His hand. The night may be long, but the light of His presence has not gone out. God has not forgotten you. He is still in control, still faithful, still enough.
The storm may not stop, but you will not sink. And one day, when you look back, you will see that God was not only in the miracle you hoped for. He was present in every unsteady moment you thought you would not make it through.
